This past Saturday, I saw a brilliant star shine!
Four students participated in the email portion of Bonus Quiz 8 with two showing up early to take on the in-person portion of BQ8. Manuel C. (Manny) made me extremely proud as he not only earned the first perfect score on a bonus quiz but on one of my signature topic: identifying the components of an URL. Well done Manny ^_^
Sara was delayed in arriving to the classroom on-time so I presented Lecture 3 The Internet (Part 3 of 3) where I continued to walk through how an Internet search engine would work and a few search engine optimization (SEO) technics. Other topics include some examples of protocols being used on the Internet, milestone moments and periods of the Internet, and the different methods of connecting to the Internet.
L3: Slide 8 shows how an Internet search engine works and some basic SEO techniques.
L3: Slide 10 shows milestone moments and periods of the Internet.
Sara followed my presentation with her Spend a Day in Las Vegas for Less Than $50 with 85°C Bakery Café in Shanghai Plaza, Savers: second-hand used clothing thrift & vintage store, and Alt-Rebel: upscale second-hand shopping store in the Arts District. This is the most original topic I have seen in many semesters. After walking through the transformation process of Sara's draft slideshow to the final slideshow, Manny answered my question to who will present their A5 Slideshow Presentation next Saturday.
At the time of this blog post, Wayne took the pole position again in terms of coursework progress. To properly conclude L3 I need to recognize the contributions of Robert "Bob" Elliot Kahn, Vinton "Vint") Gray Cerf, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, without whom, the Internet as we know and use today would not exist. Each man's A.M. Turing Award came decades after their leadership changed the world. In a future bonus quiz, I wonder if my students would be able to education Granny Moses on what each man's contribution is and how to differential the two things and a few other things that uses the first thing.

Students,
Answer these four questions in your comment:
(1) What your experience with using Microsoft Excel prior to taking IS101-3003, Fall 2023?
(2) How is Chapter 5 Microsoft Excel helping you with Microsoft Excel?
(3) Do you see or has Microsoft Excel making/made an impact on how you doing things outside of IS101?
(4) Please read this one-page article:
Cinema Chain Sees Bad Movie Script Play Out As It Loses Millions In Email Scam
and provide your thoughts on whether the two Pathé chief officers should or should not have been fired. I am eager to hear your rationale.

1. I didn't get to use Microsoft Excel much prior to IS101.
ReplyDelete2. Chapter 5 had taught me a lot about Excel. I've learned how to use all the different formulas and their functions. I love it.
3. I don't use Excel outside of IS101. Though, I'm sure that when I get the chance to, it will be much better than before.
4. I don't think it was unfair that both of them got fired. They're the head of that branch. It's their responsibility. They get paid more than everyone else in the office. They were aware that the request was odd, so they should've checked with more people even if it was marked as "strictly confidential". Someone has to know more about it. It was their mistake, they should've been more manly to admit it. I don't like when someone pushes their blame off to someone else.
I would classify my experience with Microsoft Excel slightly past "Beginner." My employers all needed me to just be able to navigate through cells and organize information so others would understand it. I once took a 6-hour Excel course sponsored by my job many years ago, but there was so much information given, I didn't retain anything.
ReplyDeleteChapter 5 is helping me with Microsoft Excel by helping me understand what the many functions in the ribbons are used for. Previously I would ignore all of them except for "Font" and "Colors."
What I'm learning in Chapter 5 Microsoft Excel is slowly incorporating its way into my daily life at work. I keep a spreadsheet at work of all of the inventory we receive and whether we sent it to a new location or have it in the storeroom. I have added certain features that have made the spreadsheet much easier to utilize and have made it my own personal project to make it impressive.
I believe the two Pathé chief officers should have been fired because they negligently lost the company 19 million Euros. Any transfer of that amount should be checked, double checked and verified before sending to anyone or organization. This accounted for a hefty loss in the company's profit and probably cost lower-level employees their jobs to account for it. I was once pulled in for questioning and reprimanded when I worked at McDonald's for my register being just $40 short. A 19 million dollar mistake should hold a much higher consequence.
My experience with using Microsoft Excel prior to IS101-3003 was very minimal. I rarely used Excel when it came to school and my old restaurant jobs. Now that I work for a corporate job, Excel is important to learn and understand how to navigate so information is inputted accurately.
ReplyDeleteChapter 5 has helped me tremendously with Excel! It has helped me learn how to create spreadsheets, insert online data, and has taught me cell formatting. These are all skills that I haven't learned about before so I’m excited to use them in my personal and work life.
Microsoft Excel has definitely made a big impact on how I do things outside of IS101. I feel that Excel teaches you how to use critical thinking. This being the fact that you can never just put in an equation and get an answer. There are different phrases, commands, and rules you must follow to get a specific answer. So overall, these rules have helped my memorization and ability to problem solve in other systems that aren't Excel as well.
The article "Cinema Chain Sees Bad Movie Script Play Out As It Loses Millions In Email Scam" is a great example of why one should always pay attention and be cautious when it comes to any confidential work or personal information. Pathé Cinema chain's losing 19 million euros due to an email compromise scam should not have happened to a large company like this. The article states that the CFO and CEO did not discuss the request of 800,000 euros which was already an odd request. I believe that the termination of both officers was fair. The company as a whole lost 19 million euros (equivalent to US$21.5m), which I believe could be a criminal offense to those at fault. The two officers who were terminated are lucky they did not have to pay these fees back for their lack of communication and attention to detail.
1. I had used Microsoft Excel at work before but I consider myself an average user with very basic knowledge.
ReplyDelete2 & 3. This class has helped me and made feel more comfortable using the system and the shortcuts and formulas are so helpful. I can already see the powerful and positive impact the class had in my professional life and I'm very grateful for it.
4. Both officers were high ranked officials in a position of power and control like no other. Employees are dependent on this official to take care of the company and their employment. It was negligence at its peak and they both deserved to lose their job.
(1) I would say my experience with Microsoft Excel will be pass beginner level. Just because at work, I use it on a daily basis to help monitor daily loss or gain of our hotel.
ReplyDelete(2) Now that I am taking this course, it made me comfortable to use and utilize every feature and function the program has to offer me.
(3) Yes it did make huge impact, specially in getting my job done sufficiently and effectively.
(4) I agree, both of the chief officers should have been fired for not doing their part.
