This past Saturday saw six students earn their Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certificates :-)
The class session kicked off with Nadia's A5 Slideshow Presentation on South Korea where the young lady showcased language, k-pop, and food from The Land of the Morning Calm. I used the walkthrough of the transformation process for Nadia's slideshow to reiterate key points such as
- Maintaining height and width ratio when resizing
- Over layering images to not only better fit multiple images on a slide but also produce a subtle perception of depth
- Using a consist order of animation directions between slides to give a sense of cohesion
The remainder of the class session saw students catching up and preparing for their MOS certification exams.
After earning his MOS Associate distinction a week before this past Saturday, Wayne ventured beyond the boundaries of IS101 to practice for MO-111 Word Expert using GMetrix. This past Saturday, the former Navy Man's ambition paid off as he is now halfway to earning his MOS Expert distinction, MO-211 Excel Expert will fall this coming Saturday!
Anisley (Ani) and Manassiya took on and passed MO-210 Excel. I know they will take on MO-310 PowerPoint this Saturday and join Wayne as MOS Associates this coming Saturday. Nadia, Leina, and Valeria began took and passed their first MOS certification exam: MO-110 Word. May they find the same success with MO-210 and/or MO-310 this coming Saturday.
I'm still riding high on the excitement from my students' six certificates earned yesterday and 100% success rate on MOS certification exams thus far this semester. May this excitement soar even higher ^_^

(A) This 2 min 17 sec video is a perfect complement to Nadia's A5: AI goes mainstream in South Korea.
(B) From an earlier assignment, students shared whether they have or have not used each of the 13 tips and reminders in their job hunting from the two-page article 7 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Your Job Search.
(C) Despite being from November 2011, the 7 min 47 sec The Story of Electronics is still relevant today.
Students,
Please share your thoughts on:
(a) What do you think of artificial intelligence (AI) replacing human performance? Can what you do be replaced or enhanced by AI?
(b) Please choose a unique tip/reminder from the thirteen and share your experience with it. Unique means if someone else already used a tip/reminder, you will need to choose a new one. Be sure to use the leading zero when identifying your chosen tip/reminder (i.e. T09, not T9).
(c) What do you think of the design for the dump concept? Did The Story of Electronic make you think about how you would choose, manage, and dispose of your electronic devices?

(a) I think artificial intelligence has both good and bad qualities in regards to replacing humans. On one end, its an exact science and cancels out human error; but on the other it's costing specialist their jobs. There will definitely be a shift in the near future from hands-on specialist, to the developers that help eliminate the need for hands on specialist.
ReplyDelete(b) T13- Remember how much you have to offer the job. This speaks to me because thinking back over the many unsuccessful interviews I've had in the past were mostly because I wasn't confident. I went in thinking the position was above me and I didn't qualify for them. As I have gotten older and more confident, remembering how much I have to offer the job I am applying for allows me to be more confident and show more of my personality. Employers can pick up on this and it works in my favor.
(c) The Designed for the Dump concept is awful for the environment, but as someone who upgrades their tech devices frequently- I understand. I have a jumble of wires like she has in the video, along with old laptops and tablets I no longer use. There should be a better way of disposing of these devices, but I don't see anything happening in the near future until companies can turn over a profit doing so.
1. I believe AI is here to stay and as humans is our responsibility and obligation to develop and make it work to our advantage. I firmly believe is an enhancement to our lifestyles and quality of life is used appropriately.
ReplyDelete2. T12 - Understand the power of negotiation. In recent years I understood to never accept the first offer an employer offers. Especially since I have been in the hiring side of the workforce and I've NEVER offered the top value we are willing to offer as a company. There is always room for negotiation and I enjoy seeing a candidate who's confident enough to counteroffer an initial letter.
3. I wish I could change so many environmental issues but the reality of it all is capitalism or the most part is concerned with profits. Properly disposing of the waste is a drain in big companies' bank accounts and until big companies are fully put on blast and made ethically responsible to change their practices there is little we can do as end consumers other than properly dispose of our devices, which, don't get me wrong can help but won't make the big change we are looking for.
1. I don't think AI could ever truly replace humans for good. It's going to evolved for sure, but it's going to be working alongside humans one way or another. Compare to 100 years ago, technology has made our lives a lot more convenient. I believe AI could do the same thing for the future. Of course there are down sides when it comes to certain things, but so does everything else.
ReplyDelete2. T04: "Polish your resume". Resume is a huge part of interview. A lot of times, it's something interviewers look at before any interview is even scheduled or conducted. I used to apply for jobs with no resume because I didn't have any experience. I had a lot of help from everyone around me and was able to polish up a decent enough resume to apply. That's when I started to get more call backs and interviews. People always say, polish your resume for the job that you want.
3. I don't really own many technology devices, so I don't know the best way to dispose of them. There isn't much we can do as consumers of these products. There are ideas, but realistically incredibly difficult to make happen. There just isn't much change we can do. It's just unfortunate.
1) I think artificial intelligence has both good and bad qualities in regard to replacing humans. The good quality of AI is that it can help avoid human mistakes that we make. The one bad thing about AI is that they can take our job away but they never can replace our humanity with AI.
ReplyDelete2) T10 - The one thing I learned from a previous failed job interview is that I was not prepared for the interview. It is very a good idea to do homework on the interviewer and the company so you’re adequately prepared to do the interview. In addition, come to the interview with your own personal interview story and with questions for the interviewer.
3) The design for the dump concept, I did not know how bad it was for our environment. Now that I know, I am going to educate myself in how to safely and correctly dispose electronic devices.
1) I believe artificial intelligence can be helpful and useful for the right reasons. AI is helpful when trying to produce information promptly. In my opinion, coming up with ideas can be replaced by artificial intelligence. For example, if I were to come up with a topic for an important essay, hypothetically, AI could create an idea and write the essay without any of my help.
ReplyDelete2) T06 - The reminder that was most impactful to me was "Inventory your network.” Strengthening your network can open up many new doors to a successful future. Every job that I have been hired for has mostly been through referrals. These referrals wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't networked with others.
3) The design for the dump concept was very eye-opening. This video helped me understand that by being mindful consumers, supporting improved e-waste management regulations, and taking part in recycling initiatives, individuals can make a difference. It's critical to understand how our decisions affect the health of the environment and future generations.
(a) What do you think of artificial intelligence (AI) replacing human performance? Can what you do be replaced or enhanced by AI?
ReplyDeleteI think that many aspects of human productivity can be replicated by artificial intelligence when it comes to automation. Tasks such as chatbots for company websites and customer service call centers could be replaced by AI within a year. Students cannot be replaced by AI because students have personality and creativity that machine learning products cannot replicate. AI also cannot feel emotions, this is just something that cannot be replaced.
(b) Please choose a unique tip/reminder from the thirteen and share your experience with it. Unique means if someone else already used a tip/reminder, you will need to choose a new one. Be sure to use the leading zero when identifying your chosen tip/reminder (i.e. T09, not T9).
T11 - "Follow up" is one of the most common-sense tips, yet it is one of the least performed. So many times, in a job search people show up for the interview and fail to follow up thanking the interviewer for their time and providing further documentation of skills or events discussed in the interview. More often than not, the candidate for the job that follows up is granted the position.
(c) What do you think of the design for the dump concept? Did The Story of Electronic make you think about how you would choose, manage, and dispose of your electronic devices?
The design for the dump concept was a very informative video that highlighted the lifecycle of electronic devices. Too often, electronic devices have a short lifespan and are discarded incorrectly when in reality they could have been recycled and repurposed. Individuals should be more conscious in disposing of their electronic devices in a way that they have a chance to be repurposed in the future. If this is done, we can greatly reduce the overall pollution in our planet.
